BIO
The sound
track of hopeful melancholy. With a deeply reflective tone, the new
EP from Fred Magie feels like the quietening of the world at dusk in
fall. While wholly aware of the complexity of life, its unavoidable
challenges, Fred has painted aural pictures with his songs that do
not find their final residence in darkness and gloom but are
constantly waiting for those new beginnings in life. Weaving strong
lyrical imagery with subtle yet intricate musical arrangements, the
four songs contained within will draw you into this expectant world
of longing over and over like an encouraging word reminding you that
you are not alone. Fred?s first solo release finds him without the
comfortable surroundings he was accustomed to with his band, Molten
Blue. After being named the Best Band in the Tri-city area (The
Record, Kitchener-Waterloo) in 2002 for their sophomore album, ?Vote
For Orb?, and gaining attention in south-western Ontario for their
consistent, powerful live shows, Fred continued his routine of
writing human narratives set to melody. This project began as demo
recordings for the next Molten Blue album but soon found their own
life apart from the brand of rock and roll for which the band had
become known. With the support and direction of local producer
Trevor Titian, Fred was repeatedly challenged over the course of
seven months in pre-production to develop these songs. Finding
encouragement from the likes of great songwriters such as Lucinda
Williams, Tom Waites and Bob Dylan, Fred found his voice through
this process. ?Window To The World? begins the EP beautifully as an
expression of love from a weary spirit who has found a hand and
heart to hold. ?Wrecking Ball? further chronicles the experiences of
a couple who seek to protect each other from the world?s
tribulations. ?Halo ?Round The Moon? finds Fred covering the tune of
another well-respected song smith, Steve Earle, that matched the
tone of the recording sessions, like a diary bears witness to its
owner?s experiences of love and loss. The final track,' Sound In
Your Hand?, is a re-worked tune originally released on the Molten
Blue debut album, ?Telling Time? (1999).
Accompanying Fred are some of the finest musicians in the Hamilton
area, who aid him in bringing each tune into existence. Each
instrument perfectly blends with the others and would create a void
if any of them were absent. The beautiful and ethereal harmonies of
Lisa Winn complement Fred?s gentle vocals throughout each of the
four tracks. Mark McIntyre keeps a warm rhythm with the upright
bass, and like the comfort of your own heartbeat, Dan Lockwood
provides the understated drumming (he used only his finger tips on
the first track). While none of the instrumentation is overbearing,
the lifeblood in the songs is brought out by the piano and organ
performed by Jeremy Giesbrecht, drawing each of the parts into an
organism with an essence of its own. These four songs represent so
many things as a result of the depth captured on this disc. They are
the account of Fred Magie developing as a songwriter and an artist.
They highlight the magic that can be caught on tape occasionally
when like-minded artists come together at the right time. They tell
the story of humankind everywhere, striving to find a safe,
accepting place in a hard, impersonal world. They tell the story of
you and me, holding on to the hope that the sun will again rise and
we will have another day to experience the love we so desire.
